Product Location Assignments

Product location assignments define where products should be stored in your warehouse. By assigning products to specific locations, you establish organized storage rules that guide warehouse staff during receiving, picking, and replenishment — ensuring items always go to and come from the right place.

Key Concepts

  • Assignment Type — The purpose of the location assignment, which determines when it applies.
  • Priority — When multiple assignments exist for the same product, priority determines which one is preferred.
  • Validity Period — Assignments can be time-limited, useful for seasonal products or temporary storage arrangements.

Assignment Types

TypeDescription
DefaultThe standard storage location for the product. Used when no more specific assignment applies.
PickingThe location from which items are picked to fulfill orders. Often closer to the packing area for efficiency.
ReceivingThe location where incoming goods are initially placed during goods receipt.
OverflowAn alternative location used when the primary location is full.

Creating an Assignment

To assign a product to a location:

  1. Navigate to Inventory > Product Locations in the sidebar.
  2. Click Add Assignment.
  3. Fill in the details:
    • Product / Variant — The product (and optionally a specific variant) to assign.
    • Location — The warehouse location (e.g., Aisle A, Shelf 3, Bin 12).
    • Assignment Type — Default, Picking, Receiving, or Overflow.
    • Priority — A number indicating preference (lower numbers = higher priority).
    • Valid From — When this assignment takes effect.
    • Valid To — When this assignment expires (leave empty for permanent assignments).
  4. Click Create to save.

Managing Assignments

The assignments list shows all product-location mappings with their type, priority, and validity dates. You can:

  • Edit an assignment to change the location, type, or priority.
  • Delete assignments that are no longer needed.

Important Notes

  • A product can have multiple location assignments of different types — for example, a default storage location and a separate picking location.
  • Use priorities to control which assignment takes precedence when multiple assignments of the same type exist.
  • Time-limited assignments are useful for seasonal inventory or temporary promotional displays.
  • Well-organized location assignments reduce picking time and improve warehouse efficiency. Review assignments periodically as your product mix or warehouse layout changes.
